A Kitchen Steward’s Job Description
As a member of the kitchen steward department, you are a part of a team that works together to create a good atmosphere in the kitchen. Without the cooperation of each of the members, there will be chaos and confusion inside the kitchen. After all, the kitchen stewards are considered as the backbone of the restaurant industry and, as such, they have to work together to assure a smooth flow inside the workplace.
The Stewarding Department may differ from one commercial kitchen to another; however, they have common duties and responsibilities.
As a Part of the Team
As a part of the team, a kitchen steward is expected to assist any member of the staff if necessary. They may have duties of their own, but this does not mean that they will limit themselves to their duties alone. For example, you might have been assigned to wash the dishes, but this does not mean that you do not have to mop up that spill on the floor when you see one. As a kitchen steward, you should always remember the “clean as you go” policy.
You are also required to follow the rules and regulations of the restaurant. This is, of course, mandatory. However, since you are one of the people who are handling food and kitchen items, it is important then that you not only follow the health and safety policies, but you also have to remind your colleagues about the policies.
You also have to be constantly updated regarding your job. This will include going to seminars and trainings as well as undergoing tests to enhance your skills. This is especially important if you want to be promoted to a higher position. Remember, attending seminars, meetings, and trainings, etc. show your competence and your willingness to learn more.
Lastly, you always have to be courteous to the customers as well as your colleagues. If you have problems with the diners or with one of your colleagues, then be sure to approach your immediate supervisor first. Do not take matters into your own hands, especially if you are dealing with a belligerent customer.
As an Individual
As an individual, you are expected to maintain cleanliness and good behavior. The way you look and the way you behave show you as an individual and as an employee. For this reason, make sure that you always have clean and short fingernails since you will be handling food. If you have a long hair, be sure to tie your hair in a ponytail or a bun so as to avoid hair falling over your face or, worse, on the food. You also have to be very punctual when reporting for your shift. If, for some reason, you will be late or would not be able to come to work, be sure to advice your supervisor.
You should always remember that as long as you are working for the restaurant, you are carrying their name, so it is your duty to protect it and give it your best service.
